China beat out Canada as the world’s top exporter to the United States in July, according to international trade data released this week.
In July, Canada sold goods worth US$20.6-billion south of the border, down from US$24-billion in June. China, meanwhile, drew $21.3-billion for its exports to the United States, up from $21-billion a month earlier.
China’s trade volumes have been growing rapidly in recent years. Last year, China outpaced Mexico as the number 2 top goods seller to the United States. Canada, meanwhile, has seen its exports to the United States grow at a more even pace.
However, Canada is still number one for the year’s sales to date for the year, with exports to the U.S. valued at US$158.7-billion to date, compared to China’s US$130.5-billion American exports.
The strong Canadian dollar has not helped Canada’s trade volumes to the United States.
