(October 4 – 10:00 ET) –
Canada’s high quality of life is
in jeopardy due to a lack of
harmonized social and economic
policy, poor productivity, and a
lack of innovation, warns the
Conference Board of Canada.

In its annual report – the 1999
Performance and Potential report –
the Conference Board ranks Canada
on 40 key social and economic
indicators against the U.S.,
Germany, Japan, Australia, Norway,
and Sweden. It puts Canada in the
middle of the pack. The country’s
peers are changing quickly, states
the report, and are beginning to
outperform Canada.

On top of lagging productivity,
the Board says we must focus on
improving our knowledge and skills,
including cutting the high school
drop-out rate and enhancing adult
literacy.
