A computer hard drive containing the personal information of hundreds of thousands of Canadians has been recovered, Regina police said Tuesday.
Sgt. Rich Bourassa told Canadian Press “Right now our forensic examiners are looking to confirm if any of the information had indeed been accessed, but there is nothing to indicate that the information was targeted and used. He added that charges are pending against one individual.
The hard drive was installed in a computer that was apparently stolen last month from the Regina office of ISM Canada. Bourassa said it was recovered Monday.
About 650,000 clients with Winnipeg-based Investors Group Inc., Canada’s biggest mutual fund firm, are among those whose information was on the hard drive.
The records of approximately 180,000 individual pension and life insurance policyholders of Co-operators Life were also on the drive.
A class-action lawsuit has already been launched in Saskatchewan against the companies and agencies that stored information the missing hard drive.
