Monique Jérôme-Forget is stepping down as Quebec’s finance minister and leaving politics.

Jérôme-Forget, 68, announced her resignation Wednesday morning in Quebec City in a joint news conference with Premier Jean Charest.

“I take great pride in having been able to serve Quebecers for more than 10 years. A passion for getting things done, in the public
interest, to prepare Quebec’s future and contribute to its influence, both here and abroad: for me, that has been the beacon that has guided my actions,” Jérôme-Forget said.

In March, she tabled Quebec’s first deficit budget in more than a decade.

“Yes, there will be a deficit, but the state must assume the role demanded by the current situation. In this budget, I identified possible solutions for returning to balanced budgets within five years. It will take courage, perseverance and discipline,” Jérôme-Forget said.

Jérôme-Forget was first elected to Quebec’s national assembly in 1998 and represents the Marguerite-Bourgeoys riding. She was named finance minister in April 2007.

“You will understand that I am returning to a normal life, with my family, which for me is what is
most precious in life,” Jérôme-Forget concluded.
