Merrill Lynch has appointed James Quigley, president of Merrill Lynch International, to the new position of senior vice president of global client strategies.

He has also been appointed to the office of the chairman, and he will report to Arshad Zakaria and Paul Roy, co-presidents of the global markets and investment banking group. In this role, Quigley will have responsibility for the alignment of Merrill’s core client relationships in the investment banking business. “In assuming this role, he will ensure that the full capabilities of Merrill Lynch are optimally aligned with the increasingly complex needs of our institutional client base. He will work in partnership with the heads of GMI’s core businesses and regional executive management to best prioritize and implement client coverage and origination strategies to maximize revenue opportunities,” said Merrill. “This will include the critical alignment of the company’s global client origination efforts with those of its newly formed Merrill Lynch Bank Group.”

“James’ comprehensive understanding of our clients’ needs, the global financial markets and the multi-cultural nature of our business uniquely qualify him for this expanded position,” said David Komansky, chairman and CEO, and Stan O’Neal, president and COO, of Merrill Lynch.

Prior to this appointment, Quigley was senior vice president and head of client strategies for Merrill’s global debt markets group. He has been with Merrill since 1983, holding a number of senior positions, including executive director of the London syndicate group, head of the U.S. high grade syndicate group, global debt new issues, and head of the global debt transactions group.
