UBS AG has appointed Paul Knight as chairman and CEO of UBS Canada, the Swiss-based bank said Friday.

In this role, he will report to Robert Wolf, chairman and CEO, UBS Americas. Knight will also continue in his current role as joint global head of metals and mining for the investment banking division.

Currently residing in London, England, Knight will re-locate to Toronto and assume his new duties as of June 1.

Knight joined SG Warburg (a predecessor firm to today’s UBS) in London in 1994. During his 15-year career at UBS Investment Bank, Knight has worked in New York and Hong Kong in addition to London. He has previously been the head of the industrials team in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, head of Latin American investment banking, and co-head of Americas metals and mining team.

“Canada has been a profitable contributor to UBS’s global operations and we see a number of opportunities to grow all of our businesses here,” says Knight. “I also see Toronto becoming a bigger centre for the metals and mining business of UBS’s investment bank.”

Knight began his career at McCarthy & McCarthy (now McCarthy Tétrault) in Toronto. He later moved to Tokyo to practice international corporate law before joining Nomura Securities. He later became a senior banker at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London and Moscow before joining UBS.

Born in Montreal, Knight is fluent in French. He was educated at Queen’s University and Clare College, University of Cambridge. He is married with three children.
