Stocks on the S&P/TSX composite index in Toronto finished up 83.59 points at 6,697.93. The jump marked a rebound from Friday’s weakness.
All 10 TSX sub-indexes closed higher. Market momentum was positive. Advancing issues outnumbered declining issues by 590 to 435. Volume was a light at 127 million shares traded.
Gold stocks were popular throughout the day. Gold issues, as a sub-sector, jumped 4.74%, led by Goldcorp which rose $1.16, or 8.5 percent, to $14.80. Kinross Gold also put in a good showing, adding16¢ to $2.71.
Financial stocks added 1.12%. Investors are awaiting the latest round of earnings news. Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia report tomorrow. BMO rose 78¢ to $37.47. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce climbed 72 ¢ to $42.74. Royal Bank of Canada added 94¢ to $54.99.
South of the 49th parallel, stocks rallied too. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.05 points to 8,919.01. The Nasdaq composite index added 11.12 points to 1,391.74.
