(September 27 – 11:45 ET) – The
U.S. Department of Justice has
agreed to the decimalization of
stock prices and granted antitrust
clearance for the proposal to the
Securities Industry Association.
SIA’s plan calls for a three-
stage phase-in of decimalization
starting next summer. Between July
3 and Aug. 4, 2000, 30 to 40
securities will be selected by
the markets and SIA’s Decimal
Steering Committee to begin
trading in 5¢ increments.
Between Aug. 7 and Sept. 29,
2000, all securities would begin
trading in nickel increments, and
on Oct. 2, 2000, all securities
would be free to trade in whatever
increments the market dictates.
The SIA will submit a formal
proposal on decimalization to the
SEC later this week.
