(July 6 – 09:30 ET) – Royal Bank is bragging about the success of its online banking business this morning.

RBC says its one millionth Canadian online customer has logged on four months sooner than expected, and it continues to register new accounts at a rate of more than 13,000 per week. RBC has doubled its online client base since October 1999.

“Our objective is to capitalize on the delivery advantages of the Internet, while enhancing existing businesses and creating new financial products and services,” said Jim Rager, vice- chairman, personal & commercial banking. “One million customers confirms our progress.”

RBC says it is second only to the federal government as Canada’s largest user of technology, with spending of more than $1 billion annually and 2,540 information technology professionals on staff. It notes that the U.K.-based Lafferty Group has ranked it as the top Internet bank for two consecutive years.
