The RCMP charged a man with defrauding the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) an Old Age Security (OAS) of approximately $133,000 last week.

The London, Ont. detachment of the RCMP announced that Myung-Joon Kang of London has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 for allegedly defrauding the CPP and OAS systems. Police allege that Kang collected pension benefits of a deceased relative for 19 years.

It reports that Employment and Social Development Canada identified the overpayment of benefits and contacted the RCMP for further investigation. “The RCMP is committed to working with our partners to investigate such activities and raise public awareness with regards to the consequences of defrauding the federal government and the taxpayers of Canada,” said Staff Sergeant Steve Arthur, acting officer in charge of the London detachment.

The allegations have not been proven. Kang is scheduled to appear at the London Court House on October 10.
