The Manitoba Securities Commission is hosting its first ever industry seminar, A Dialogue with the MSC, on December 3 at the Royal Oak Inn in Brandon.

Topics addressed during the day-long conference will include Market Integrity Issues, Changes within the Regulatory Framework, Making the Markets More Efficient and Issues Facing Securities Markets and Regulators. Conference speakers will include professional staff from the commission, as well as securities industry professionals.

“In today’s environment, markets and products are constantly changing,” says Don Murray, chair of the MSC. “The face of regulation is also changing and it is more important than ever for market participants to remain current in their knowledge of products, market trends and what is expected of them by the regulators. This conference is intended to be a sharing of information and education by the securities commission, with the industry, in an informal setting and will be of benefit to all who attend.”

The MSC will also be hosting free public seminars for residents in Brandon and surrounding areas.

Representatives from the Commission, along with industry professionals, will be in Brandon to talk to the public about Investment Scams, Choosing a Financial Advisor and the Public Complaint Process.

“Over 70% of Manitobans own investments of one type or another,” says Murray. “These seminars will tell average investors what to look for in an advisor, how to protect themselves from con artists and what steps to take if they feel they have been treated unfairly. There is something of value in these sessions for anyone who is an investor or is thinking of becoming one.”
