Each week, we summarize notable moves across the financial industry.
Taylan Turan has been named COO and senior executive vice-president of TD Bank Group, starting Sept. 29. Turan has spent 16 years with HSBC in a variety of senior retail banking, wealth management and strategy and planning roles, and is currently head of integration, international wealth and premier banking based in London. During his over 25-year international career, he’s also held senior roles with Barclays in United Arab Emirates and Citi in Turkey. He will relocate to Toronto.
TD also announced two other appointments. Paul Whitehead has been named executive vice-president, global head of client & colleague experience and marketing, effective Dec. 1. Whitehead began his career with TD more than 35 years ago as a teller, before being promoted to increasingly senior roles. He’s currently executive VP, Canadian Branch Banking. Whitehead will take over some responsibilities from Christine Morris, senior EVP, transformation, enablement and customer experience, who is retiring at the end of the year after 36 years with the bank.
And Simon Fish will join the bank as executive VP and general counsel. He previously spent 13 years with BMO. He will succeed Jane Langford, who’s leaving TD after 13 years.
The bank has seen a number of leadership changes this year, including at the CEO and board level as it recovers from anti-money laundering charges in the U.S. last year. “TD is building a bank for the future, with top talent and a sharp focus on disciplined execution and client experience leadership,” said Raymond Chun, president and CEO, in a release. “I’m energized to work with these strong executives and leaders across the bank to drive change, support clients and accelerate growth.”
Other moves include:
- David Noel has been appointed executive vice-president and COO, Caribbean, at Sagicor Financial. Noel’s moving from Scotiabank, where he spent nearly 25 years. He worked for the bank in the Caribbean and in Canada, most recently serving as COO of Canadian banking.
- Alastair Angus has been named chief information officer at CIBC Mellon. Angus has more than 20 years of experience in technology and digital transformation with firms including Credit Suisse, UBS and Morgan Stanley, as well as Canada Pension Plan Investments and fintech startup Prospect 33.
