The Investment Dealers Association is dipping into the ranks of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for its new top cop.

The IDA has hired Aleksandar Popovic as its new vice president, enforcement.

Paul Bourque, the IDA’s new senior vice president, Member Regulation, reports that Popvic is “currently an inspector with the RCMP and has extensive commercial crime, market group and management experience with the RCMP. ” The appointment will be formally announced in a news release tomorrow.

Popovic is currently attached to the RCMP’s Milton detachment. He is a lawyer and member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and has his Masters in securities law, according to Bourque, who says, ” We were delighted to bring him onboard.”

Popovic takes a job that has been vacant for several months following the departure of Fred Maefs, who came over from the TSE when the IDA took over member regulation.

Earlier this year, Bourque was brought in as a replacement for Greg Clarke. Clarke and Maefs left the IDA in the wake of a damning compliance report from the Ontario Securities Commission, which assailed the SRO’s enforcement record. Together, Bourque and Popovic, will be charged with rehabilitating its record and restoring the organization’s reputation.
