George Anderson, president and CEO of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, will be given a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Sunday, November 18, and will deliver the convocation address at Carleton University in Ottawa, during the afternoon ceremony.

The honourary degree is in recognition of Anderson’s outstanding career in both the public and private sectors.

Anderson, who graduated from Carleton with a B.A. in 1969, is a former president and CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., and a former vice president of National Trust.

“Attending Carleton University was a wonderful and really life changing experience for me,” Anderson says.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Anderson was Chairman of Central Guaranty Trust. It was while he held this position that he became the second Canadian ever to be selected as Business Communicator of the Year by the International Association of Business Communicators.

As Head of Delegation, Anderson has represented Canada on several international delegations in Europe, Africa and Japan. In 1988, he chaired the Economic Commission for Europe Research Symposium on Urban Planning. From 1986 to 1990, he was co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Joint Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs.

Anderson has served as chair and trustee of several public and private pension funds, and is a director of The Empire Club of Canada. He has also chaired several charitable funds, and was appointed to the National Crime Prevention Council in 1994.
