Goldman Sachs led merger & acquisition activity during the first quarter, according to rankings released by Global Securities Information, Inc.

Goldman Sachs’s 15 first quarter mergers and acquisitions deals totalled over $37 billion, enough to top Morgan Stanley, whose 15 deals totalled over $33 billion.

Rounding out the top five were Citigroup, Lehman Brothers and Credit Suisse First Boston.

The highest ranked Canadian firm was BMO Nesbitt Burns in 16th place, with two deals that totallled US$4.9 billion.

CIBC was ranked 18th, TD Securities was 20th, and GMP Capital was ranked 21.
