BMO Capital Markets has hired David Sawyer as Managing Director and Head of U.S. Restructuring, based in the New York office, BMO Financial Group said Thursday.

“Given the current economic climate, we anticipate increased activity in the corporate restructuring marketplace and are pleased that David, with his depth of knowledge and experience in restructuring distressed companies, has joined BMO to help grow our presence in this arena,” said Scott Humphrey, executive managing director, head of U.S. mergers and acquisitions, in a release. “The ability to provide restructuring is a natural complement to our universal banking platform, including our advisory and capital raising services.”

Sawyer joins BMO Capital Markets from Silver Point Capital, a US$10 billion distressed debt-focused investment fund where he built and headed the firm’s restructuring and portfolio groups. He was also a founding member of Greenwich, Conn.-based Silver Point’s Special Situations Group, focused on distressed private equity investments.

Prior to joining Silver Point in 2004, Sawyer was at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he worked as a workout and restructuring banker. David graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in Finance.

BMO Capital Markets has more than 50 M&A professionals across the U.S. and Canada.
