(June 21 – 11:40 ET) – Brokers and banks reported no service disruptions this morning after a fire in an underground vault knocked out power in the financial district during the busy morning commute.

The fire began shortly before 6:00 a.m. in a vault located on King Street between Yonge and Bay streets. The fire left commuters at Union Station finding their way under emergency lighting while many of the underground tunnels that lace the downtown core were emptied.

Traffic was snarled as traffic lights in the area were out and streetcars were rerouted.

Nevertheless, the major banks and brokerages along with the TSE say they suffered no service disruptions. Some members of the TSE who couldn’t gain access to the building early in the morning made special arrangements to trade offsite.

In fact traders at RBC Dominion Securities reported they were fine, and more than a little e busy this morning.

“We’re fine, we’re trading like usual. Actually I’ve gotta go, it’s hopping here today,” said one trader when contacted by a reporter.
