The Bank of Canada rolled out a new $20 bill today, the latest piece of paper money to be given new anti-counterfeiting technology and a facelift.

The new note will be put into circulation beginning Sept. 29, and will be available across the country within two weeks of that date.

The back of the new $20 bill is devoted to the theme of arts and culture, and will honour the works of artist Bill Reid. He was an internationally known sculptor, carver, and jeweller. Reid was often credited with the revival of Northwest Coast Native art.

The Bank of Canada said the new $20 bill will include similar anti-counterfeiting technology to that included on the recently issued $100 bill. Those features include a metallic holographic stripe, a watermarked portrait, a windowed colour-shifting thread woven into the paper, and a see-through number.

The Bank of Canada plans to issue a new $50 note, which will go into circulation beginning on Nov. 17.

An upgraded $10 bank note is planned for release in 2005.
