The Bank of Canada today announced the creation of an award that will be presented annually to a police officer who demonstrates outstanding commitment and initiative in the fight against bank note counterfeiting.
The inaugural Law Enforcement Award of Excellence will be presented in August at the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) conference in Vancouver. Recipients will receive a citation from the Bank’s governor David Dodge.
The central ank says that the creation of the award is part of its continuing effort to improve the security of bank notes and to encourage counterfeit detection and prevention efforts by police agencies, businesses and individual Canadians.
“The Bank of Canada is proud to honour law enforcement’s significant contribution to the fight against counterfeiting,” stated deputy governor Pierre Duguay who is responsible for the currency function. “The new award supports the Bank’s commitment to provide bank notes that are readily accepted and in which Canadians can have confidence.”
The award selection committee comprises three representatives from the Bank of Canada, one representative from the RCMP, and one representative from the CACP’s Prevention of Crime in Industry Committee. Nominations will be solicited from Canadian law enforcement agencies by April 30 of each year.
