Finance Minister Paul Martin announced that the third meeting of the G-20 finance ministers and central bank governors will be held at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa on November 16 and 17.
The meeting was initially planned for New Delhi, but it cancelled after September 11. Martin then invited the G-20 to Canada. The inaugural G-20 meeting took place in Berlin in December 1999. It was followed by a second meeting in Montréal in October 2000. Martin has been chair of the group since its founding.
Ministers and governors will discuss the role of the G-20 in the fight against terrorism and continue to examine ways to make the world less vulnerable to financial crises. “The G-20 is well placed to respond quickly to the pressing needs of a fast-changing global environment,” said Martin. “These discussions are an important and timely step that builds on recent efforts in the international fight against terrorism.”
The International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund and the Development Committee of the IMF and World Bank Group will also meet at the centre on November 17 and 18.
