Federal Finance Minister Ralph Goodale announced yesterday he is bringing together provincial ministers to work toward creating a national stock market regulator.

The federal government favours a national system, but is willing to consider provincial proposals for a more decentralized system, a federal official said.

The ministers’ conference is scheduled for Sept. 29 in Ottawa. “The objective of making this a world-class, world-calibre system in Canada is an objective that everybody would share,” Goodale told reporters following a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade yesterday.

“Different provinces and jurisdictions have different perspectives on this and we will see what comes from the discussion,” he said.
