The British Columbia Securities Commission is hosting its second annual Capital Ideas full-day industry conference on June 6.

This year’s theme focuses on new and innovative ways to regulate the securities industry.

The BCSC says that the conference will be an opportunity to hear about its consultations with industry, other provincial regulators, SROs and other stakeholders as it reviews securities legislation. The keynote luncheon speaker is Linda Hohol, new president of the TSX Venture Exchange.

Doug Hyndman, chair of the BCSC and the Canadian Securities Administrators, will talk about the issues facing both the BCSC and the CSA.

Steve Wilson, the commission’s executive director, will give a progress report on its initiatives, and, Brent Aitken, the commissioner heading the Deregulation Project Team, will unveil its latest proposals.

The afternoon break-out sessions will look at financing for start-ups; issues relevant to directors and officers; a look at how issuers will operate under the proposed Continuous Market Access system; supervision of client accounts; a panel will also discuss the optimum level of regulation. The panel includes: John Kaiser, publisher of the Kaiser Bottom-Fishing Report; Derek Spratt, founder of Intrinsyc Software Inc.; Michael Walker, executive director of The Fraser Institute; and Hyndman.
