The firm reports that Thomson Financial credits it with 117 announced Canadian M&A deals, 33 more than its closest competitor. It also says it leads the Thomson Financial table for the most completed Canadian M&A deals in 2006 with 107 deals.

David Tennant, co-practice group leader of McCarthy Tétrault’s Business Law Group, said, “2006 was a banner year for M&A activity and I don’t see an end in sight, given the capital strength of the private equity sector, consistently low interest rates and the overall strength of the Canadian economy.”

“In Canada, the value of M&A deals almost doubled from US$89 billion in 2005 to US$173.6 billion in 2006. As KPMG reported, the number of Canadian M&A deals increased by 26% over 2005 with financials, natural resources, and oil and gas dominating the field,” he added. “In 2007, I believe we will see more M&A transactions in these fields, as well as power, telecommunications and technology.”
