NDP Leader Jack Layton revealed more details of his tax plans for Canadians on Monday, promising to increase child tax credits.

Visiting a day-care centre in Vancouver, Layton said he would increase the Child Tax Benefit to $4,900 from $2,600 per year.

Layton said the New Democrats would also continue the full indexing of tax brackets so taxpayers aren’t pushed into higher brackets as incomes rise through inflation alone. Tax brackets were indexed to inflation by then finance minister Paul Martin in his 2000 budget, eliminating so-called “bracket creep.”

Layton again announced he would exempt people with incomes under $15,000 from paying income tax.

He also repeated his pledge to remove the goods and services tax from family essentials, including children’s clothing and medicine, medical equipment, school supplies, books and magazines, and women’s hygiene products.
