(April 10 – 09:45 ET) – Investor Education Week kicks off today. The B.C. Securities Commission is pointing to tech stock volatility as an indication of the importance of wise investing.
The BCSC says it’s making a special effort to get the message to hype-prone teens and vulnerable seniors by making presentations at high schools and seniors centres across Canada.
B.C. regulators have also produced a series of videos with MuchMusic, informing teens about investing. The BCSC is also working with the Junior Achievement program to get the message out.
“Seniors have a great deal of experience investing their money. But we find that they are often the targets of scam artists,” Doug Hyndman, chair of the BCSC said in a press release, “Our aim is to provide seniors with information so they can protect themselves from financial con men.” The BCSC is working with the Canadian Association of Retired Persons and other seniors publications to help educate seniors.
