(April 23 – 15:10 ET) – The Alberta Securities Commission is celebrating Investor Education Week 2001 by targeting youth ages 15 to 18. A special initiative will see ASC staff in rural communities speaking to high school classes on the importance of investing wisely.

“Today’s teens are tomorrow’s investors,” said Stephen Sibold, ASC chair. “It’s important they get the knowledge now to prepare them for the financial decisions they’ll have to make later.”

This year’s theme is “Invest Time Before You Invest”. High school classes in Alberta will be learning the basics of investment opportunities and where to find in-depth information in order to become informed and educated investors.

“By encouraging investors and potential investors to learn more about principles of investing wisely, we’re empowering them to ask more questions and reduce their risk,” said Sibold.

This is the fourth time Alberta will celebrate Investor Education Week, which was started by securities regulators in more than 25 countries from North & South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The overall goal of the project is to provide information which will ideally help all participants in making informed decisions for managing and investing money — the end result being informed investors in a confident, healthy capital market.
