(April 28, 16:45ET) – The language of the soon-to-be-formed NASDAQ Canada will be solely English, according to NASDAQ’s media relations director in an exclusive interview with Smallcapcenter.com. But a Quebec government official says otherwise.

“The Government of Quebec has agreed to allow the new NASDAQ Canada to function in English only, a NASDAQ official said today. However, a Quebec Government official immediately denied that, saying instead that the ‘status quo’ will be maintained, and that transactions in Quebec will be done in English and French. Scott Peterson, NASDAQ’s media relations director, was initially reluctant to discuss the sensitive language issue, but ultimately confirmed that NASDAQ’s Montreal terminal will be an English-only terminal.

“‘Well, you know, let’s see,” he said, “the agreement says Quebec shall additionally support an initiative to permit NASDAQ Canada issuers to make filings in English only.

“‘It is our intention that the NASDAQ terminals will be English only,’ he continued. ‘The international language of finance is English.’”
