Tiff Macklem, former senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada (BoC), has been appointed to Toronto-based Bank of Nova Scotia’s board of directors.

“Tiff’s professional experience and understanding of the financial services industry makes him a strong addition to Scotiabank’s board of directors,” says Thomas O’Neill, chairman of the board of directors at Scotiabank (TSX:BNS). “We look forward to the insight and international knowledge that he will bring to the board.”

Macklem was senior deputy governor of BoC from 2010 to 2014. He shared responsibility with the governor and four deputy governors for monetary policy and for the BoC’s role in promoting financial stability. He was also the central bank’s chief operating officer, a member of its board of directors and represented the BoC at the Financial Stability Board (FSB), which is based in Basel, Switzerland.

Prior to his time as senior deputy governor at the central bank, Macklem served as associate deputy minister of the federal Department of Finance Canada and Canada’s finance deputy at the G7 and G20.

Macklem is currently the dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
