Sandra Stuart will be president and CEO of Vancouver-based HSBC Bank Canada as of June 1. Stuart is a 33-year veteran of HSBC, who has been chief operating officer for the firm’s Canadian banking arm since 2010.

Stuart joined HSBC in 1982. Her roles have included senior vice president and head of operations for HSBC Bank Canada; chief information officer, head of information technology for group personal financial services for HSBC North America; and senior manager for call centre operations in Brazil. She is currently a member of the HSBC Bank Canada board of directors and national chair of HSBC’s diversity and inclusion council. Stuart is also a member of the faculty advisory board at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business Faculty and active in the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

“Canada is a key market for HSBC and, particularly as a Canadian, I am extremely proud of our role in the HSBC Group,” says Stuart. “Building on what we have achieved to date, I look forward to continuing to grow our business and invest in Canada for many years to come. In the near term, I am keen to spend even more time with our customers and employees across the country.”

Stuart succeeds Paulo Maia, who has been appointed CEO of HSBC Latin America, which is effective July 1. Maia is a group general manager for HSBC Holdings plc. He was also CEO of HSBC Bank Australia and prior to that, deputy CEO of HSBC Bank Brazil.

Says Maia: “It has been a real privilege to work with our Canadian customers and the Canadian team. Canada is a priority growth market for HSBC and is consistently among the top five contributors in the Group.”

The firm also announced that Jason Henderson, executive vice president, managing director and head of global banking and markets for the Canadian bank, has been appointed to the HSBC Bank Canada board of directors.
