Former central banker Tiff Macklem has been named chairman of the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services (GRI).
The GRI said Wednesday that Macklem joined the organization, which focuses on research and education, as its new chair on May 1.
Macklem, who now serves as dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto was previously senior deputy governor at the Bank of Canada. Previously, he was at the federal Department of Finance.
“Risk is inherent to all financial systems around the world. GRI’s mission is to help organizations enhance their risk capacity and expertise. Having successfully engaged with the Canadian financial services community and beyond, we now intend to further expand GRI’s international reach, working with partners in government and financial services globally,” said Macklem.
Last week, GRI named financial industry veteran Richard Nesbitt as its new president and CEO.

Macklem replaces Paul Cantor, who decided to step down from the role of chair after more than three years.
GRI was founded by the federal government Canada, the province of Ontario, TD Group and Manulife in 2011. It provides applied research and educational programs to financial institutions, policymakers and regulators.
