Kingston, Ont.-based Empire Life Insurance Co. on Friday announced the appointment of Erik Kalin as vice president and chief operations officer, retail overseeing Empire’s retail insurance and investments operations.
Previously, Kalin was vice president, IT strategy and innovation, driving the company’s digital strategy and providing his leadership to numerous initiatives, including the launch of the Fast and Full online application process and empirelife.ca.
Prior to working at Empire Life, Kalin worked in both technology and business environments in banking, telecoms and insurance. He has his MBA and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering from Queen’s University.

The insurer also announced that Jonathan Hede is joining Empire Life as vice president, risk management effective March 6.
Hede has provided advisory services to life insurance companies of all sizes in North America and Asia and has experience leading and motivating high-performing teams of actuaries and analysts.
He has a Bachelor of Mathematics, Actuarial Science and Statistics from the University of Waterloo and is a past chairman of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries committee on investment practice.
