(March 15 – 13:50 ET) – The recent attacks on websites of major e-commerce businesses have caused many companies to worry about protecting their own e-commerce websites. To help these companies, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants is offering the following top ten tips for protecting an e-commerce website.

1. Conduct a risk assessment of your Internet business.
2. Develop security standards.
3. Test your defenses.
4. Develop procedures for prevention, and use independent third parties to test them.
5. Limit the number of individuals who may access the controls to your e-commerce business.
6. Use firewalls.
7. Use security tools including e-mail security tools: Use security system tools to enforce your organization’s security policies.
8. Monitor your networks for unusual activity.
9. Contact your Internet Service Provider.
10.Report computer violations to law enforcement authorities.

Companies can also look toward having a CA WebTrust™ seal assigned to their website to bolster confidence in their e-commerce business. CA WebTrust is a service enabling CAs and their international counterparts to examine online businesses to determine if they are legitimate, their transactions are secure, and the information they collect from customers is kept private.

CA WebTrust is now being used in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia and New Zealand.
