Toronto stocks moved higher Monday, as strength in the overall broader market easily overshadowed modest weakness in the energy sector.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 49.67, or 0.35%, to 14,073.74.

Nine of the 10 TSX main sub-groups were up.

The energy group fell 0.21%.

EnCana Corp. fell 47¢, or 0.71%, to $65.46.

The materials sector gained 1.34%, while the gold sub-sector gained 0.25%.

Alcan gained $2.60, or 2.8%, to $94.25 as reports said that more suitors are interested in the Canadian miner.

The financials sector gained 0.33%. National Bank of Canada gained 38¢, or 0.58%, to $65.88.

The S&P TSX Venture Exchange fell 16.07, or 0.50%, to 3,226.13.

In the U.S., markets were closed in observance of Memorial Day.
