Toronto stocks finished higher Friday, as rebounding resource plays continue to boost the market after absorbing significant losses last month.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 51.69 points, or 0.44%, to 11,898.66.

Nine of the 10 TSX main sub-groups were down.

The energy sector gained 0.85%

Crude for July delivery closed up $1.99, or 2.8%, at US$72.33 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Petro Canada gained 32¢, or 0.63%, to $51.10 CAD.

The materials sector lifted 0.17%.

Gold for August delivery closed up $7.50 at US$641 an ounce on the Nymex.

Kinross Gold Corp was up 27¢, or 2.21%, to $12.46.

The Canadian dollar advanced 0.16 of a cent to US90.83¢.

The S&P/TSX Venture composite index gained 29.30, or 1.04%, o 2,856.98.

In New York, investors finished the session mixed after a volatile week.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 12.41 points to 11,247.87. The Nasdaq composite index put in a fractional loss, down 0.45 point at 2,219.41, The S&P 500 Index was up 2.51 points at 1,288.22.

On the week, the benchmark index fell 0.3%, the Nasdaq moved up 0.4%, and the S&P 500 lifted 0.6%.
