On Monday, Statistics Canada releases retail sales data for June.

Economists expect a month-over-month decline of 0.3%, compared with a gain of 1.2% in May. Excluding auto sales, an increase of 0.2% is expected, compared with a 0.7% rise in May.

On Tuesday, StatsCan releases employment insurance data for June.

Timothy Lane, deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, addresses the Canadian Association for Business Economics on “The Canadian Economy Beyond the Recession,” Kingston, Ont.

On Wednesday, StatsCan reports on second-quarter financial results for enterprises.

On Friday, StatsCan releases balance of international payments data for the second quarter. Economists expect a current account deficit of $12.1-billion.

StatsCan also releases industrial product and raw materials price indexes for July, and payroll employment, earnings and hours for June.

South of the border

On Tuesday, S&P/Case-Shiller home price indexes are released for June.

As well, the U.S. Conference Board issues its consumer confidence survey for August. Economists expect a reading of 48, up from 46.6 in July.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports on durable goods for July. Economists expect an increase in orders of 3.3% over the previous month.

Separately, Commerce reports on new home sales for July. A 1.5% increase over June is expected, to an annualized figure of 390,000.

On Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Dept. releases preliminary second-quarter GDP data. Economists expect an annualized decline of 1.4%.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 22. Economists forecast 550,000 initial claims, down from 576,000 the previous week.

On Friday, the U.S. Commerce Dept. reports on personal income and spending for July. Economists forecast an increase in personal income of 0.1% over June, and a 0.2%-gain in spending.

Corporate earnings

On Tuesday, Bank of Montreal kicks off bank earnings season when it releases it third-quarter results.

Other companies scheduled to report corporate earnings include Borders Group Inc., Burger King Corp., Medtronic Inc., and Staples Inc.

On Wednesday, CIBC releases its third-quarter results.

Corby Distilleries Ltd. reports fourth-quarter and full-year results.
Heineken NV announces half-year results.

On Thursday, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, and Toronto-Dominion Bank release their third-quarter results.

Other companies scheduled to report include Mosaid Technologies Inc., Novell Inc., and Toll Brothers Inc.

On Friday, Bank of Nova Scotia reports third-quarter results.

Tiffany & Co. reports second-quarter earnings.
