As well, the Ivey purchasing managers index for September is released. Economists expect a reading of 56.6, up from 55.7 the previous month.

The Investment Funds Institute of Canada and the Association of Canadian Compliance Professionals present the 8th Annual Compliance Forum in Toronto.

On Thursday, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. reports on housing starts in September. Economists expect 146,500 starts, on an annualized basis.

On Friday, Statistics Canada releases its labour force survey for September. Economists expect the unemployment rate to rise to 8.8% from 8.7%, and the economy to lose about 7,500 jobs.

StatsCan also reports on international merchandise trade for August. A deficit of $800 million is forecast, compared with a deficit of $1.4 billion the previous month.

U.S. and overseas

On Monday, the U.S. ISM non-manufacturing index for September is released. Economists expect the index is expected to have risen to 50 from 48.4 the previous month.

On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank begin their annual two-day meeting, Istanbul.

On Wednesday, the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee begins two-day meeting.

The EU posts its final reading on second-quarter GDP.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Oct. 3. Economists forecast 540,000 claims, down from 551,000 the previous week.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports on wholesale inventories for August. A drop of 1% is expected, compared with a 1.4% decline the previous month.

The European Central Bank and Bank of England announce interest rate decisions.

On Friday, the U.S. Commerce Dep. reports on the trade balance for August. A deficit of US$33 billion is forecast, compared with a deficit of $32 billion the previous month.

Corporate earnings

On Tuesday, Jean Coutu Group (PJC) Inc. reports its second-quarter results.

On Wednesday, Alcoa Inc. kicks off third-quarter earnings season.

Big box retailer Costco Wholesale Corp. reports fourth-quarter results, as does Monsanto Co.

On Thursday, PepsiCo Inc. reports its third-quarter share results.
