Investors will get fresh readings on the health of the Canadian economy with the release of the consumer price index and the fall fiscal update from finance minister Jim Flaherty.
On Monday, Statistics Canada reports on wholesale trade in September. Economists expect an increase of 0.3%, compared with a rise of 0.5% the previous month.
On Tuesday, StatsCan reports on retail sales for September. Economists expect a decline of 0.8%, compared with a rise of 0.1% the previous month
Separately, the government agency reports on leading indicators for October. Economists predict a decline of 0.3%, compared with 0.4% in the previous month.
On Wednesday, StatsCan releases consumer price index data for October. Economists expect a year-over-year increase of 1%, compared with a year-over-year rise of 0.7% the previous month.
On Thursday, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty delivers his fall fiscal update.
On Friday, Flaherty delivers a speech to the Economic Club of Toronto.
South of the border
On Monday, the U.S. Conference Board releases leading indicator figures for October. Economists expect an increase of 0.2%, compared with a rise of 0.1% the previous month.
On Wednesday, the University of Michigan issues its final index of consumer sentiment for November. Economists expect a reading of 93.2, up from 92.3 the previous month.
Meanwhile, The U.S. Department of Labour reports on initial jobless claims for the week ended Nov. 18. Economists forecast 310,000 claims, compared with 308,000 claims a week ago.
U.S. bond markets close early, at 2 p.m., in advance of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.
On Thursday, U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed to mark the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.
On Friday, the New York Stock Exchange will close at 1 p.m., and U.S. bond markets will close at 2 p.m., following the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. The Nasdaq Stock Market will trade during normal hours.
Coporate earnings
It’s a light week for earnings reports. Companies scheduled to release quarterly results include: Lowe’s Cos. Inc.; Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc.; George Weston Ltd.; and Van Houtte Inc.
