Technology stocks kept the Toronto Stock Exchange in the black Wednesday. The information technology sub-index soared 4.17%, as the S&P/TSX composite index climbed 9.62 points to close at 6,664.91.
Nortel had another strong day, rising 20¢ to $1.80. It was by far the most actively traded stock on the TSX with almost 37 million shares.
Tundra Semiconductor gained almost 10%, up 61 cents to $6.90, ahead of its after-the-bell Q1 earnings report. Tundra announced a narrower loss.
BCE Emergis jumped 72¢ to finish at $6.84.
The financial services sub-index slipped 0.17%, after weaker than expected results from CIBC. CIBC shares dropped $1.74 to $43.55.
Royal Bank shares were up 65¢ to $54.65 after reporting Tuesday its quarterly profit soared 66%. TD Bank will report on Thursday.
Noranda climbed 68¢ to $14.40.
Corel shares rose 9¢ to $1.14 after the company announced that Dell Computers would bundle some of Corel’s WordPerfect software on some models.
Bombardier rose 36¢ to $8.57. Biovail gained $1.93 to $44.73.
The TSX Venture Exchange was off 2.78 points at 999.1.
In New York, The Dow Jones industrial average rose 84.95 points to 8,957.02 in a volatile session. The Nasdaq composite index gained 32.50 points to close above the 1,400 level at 1,409.10. The S&P 500 was up 12.32 points at 949.75.
The Canadian dollar closed at US64.20¢, up 0.37¢.
