(February 23 – 16:15 ET) – Job creation and growth preservation is paramount for Ontario’s new Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, as he contemplates his first budget. Flaherty has been making the rounds throughout Ontario conducting pre-budget consultations.

“I was greatly pleased by the turnout at the hearings held by the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs. These hearings represent an important dialogue with the people of Ontario, at a time of change in our economy,” says Flaherty. “It is imperative at times like this that we remain vigilant about creating jobs and stimulating the economy.”

The committee heard more than 95 submissions from groups including the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the Canadian Auto Workers and the Toronto Association for Community Living. “Many of these groups acknowledge that a first class health care system and quality education are key to keeping Ontario competitive,” Flaherty says.

Further pre-budget consultations with business and industry leaders are contemplated, he says. “I expect to meet with a great many more people in the weeks ahead as we move closer to the next budget. I think it’s important that we, as a government, listen to as many views and opinions as we can to ensure that the decisions we make provide the maximum economic benefit to the province.”
