North American stock markets rallied Wednesday, paring some of Tuesday’s big losses. The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 64.21 points to close at 6,517.71.
Overall 9 of the 13 TSX sub-indices gained ground, led by a 5.22% jump in the information technology sector.
Nortel surged 30 cents to $1.85, a gain of almost 20%. Celestica rose $1.35 to $35.10; ATI Technologies added 38¢ to $8.80.
BCE shares climbed 52¢ to $28.59.
Certicom shares added 48 cents to $1.49 after it reported a sharply narrower loss and pledged to produce an operating profit by the end of October.
The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 11.96 points to 1,005.68.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 117.07 points to 8,425.12. The Nasdaq composite index climbed 28.47 points to close at 1,292.31. The S&P 500 added 15.32 points to 886.95.
The Canadian dollar fell more than 3/5ths of a cent to close at US63.81¢. The currency closed down after the central bank left its key overnight rate unchanged at 2.75% because of concerns about the U.S. economy.
