Toronto stocks ended lower Friday ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend, as a volatile day in resources, and weakness in the broader market, had investors selling.

The S&P/TSX composite index fell 59.11 points, or 0.50%, to 11,690.89.

All 10 of the TSX’s main sub-groups were down, with energy giving up 0.43%.

Light, sweet crude for November delivery fell 27¢ to close at US$59.76 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

EnCana Corp. fell 43¢, or 0.83%, to $51.27.

The materials index fell 0.58%, while the gold sub-index was off 1.43%.

Gold for December delivery gained $1.30 to close at $576.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Goldcorp shares fell 42¢, or 1.69%, to $24.46.

The Canadian dollar was down 0.05 cent to US88.79¢.

The S&P TSX Venture composite index fell 3.88 points , or 0.16%, to 2,365.66.

In New York, as investors drew down some profits after a strong week that saw the market set a new record high.

The Dow Jones fell 16.48 points to 11,850.21, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 6.35 points at 2,299.99 while the S&P 500 Index gave up 3.64 points to 1,349.58.

For the week, the Dow was up 1.5%, the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.8%, while the S&P 500 Index gained 1%.
