Toronto stocks closed up Friday, as investors bought back into the market after a big selloff in the previous session.
The S&P/TSX composite index finished up 100.14, or 0.98%, to 10,290.87.
For the week, the index still lost 222 points.
Volume on the senior exchange was 255 million shares.
Eight of the 10 TSX main sub-groups were up, with the energy sector gaining 1.41%. Yesterday the sector dropped more than 5%.
Crude oil futures settled up 61¢ at US$60.63 a barrel after dropping to a low of $59.15 in intra-day trading, a three-month low.
EnCana gained $1.25, or 2.20%, to $58.10, while PetroCanada gained 37¢, or 0.92%, to $40.50. Imperial Oil Ltd. reported a quarterly profit of $652 million, or $1.91 a share. Its shares gained $6.65, or 6.87%, to $103.50.
Celestica Inc., issued a disappointing outlook for the fourth quarter. Shares fell $1, or 8.16%, to $11.25.
Quebecor World Inc. issued an earnings warning for its third and fourth quarters. It fell $1.60, or 7.94%, to $18.55.
T he TSX gold sub-index surged 6.1%. Gold stocks rose as the December contract for gold ended up $5.90, or 1.3%, at US$469.10 an ounce, but down 0.6% for the week.
Goldcorp gained $1.93, or 9.38%, to $22.50.
Among individual stocks, Research in Motion fell $1.75 to $74 after it lost a bid to stay proceedings in its patent dispute with Virginia-based NTP Inc.
Celestica shares lost $1 to $11.25 after it reported weak financial results.
A profit warning from commercial printing giant Quebecor World knocked the company’s stock down $1.60 to $18.55.
In economic news, Statistics Canada reported retail sales fell by 0.3% to $31.16 billion, less of a drop than economists had expected.
The Canadian dollar was down 0.73 of a cent to US84.16¢.
The junior S&P/TSX Venture Composite index finished up 23.84, or 1.21%, to 1,986.78.
In New York, markets reacted to mixed corporate results and a drop in energy prices due to indications of increased supply.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 65.88 points to 10,215.22, the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 14.10 points to 2,082.21, and the S&P 500 Index was up 1.79 points at 1,179.59.
For the week, the Dow fell 0.7% this week, the Nasdaq gained 0.8%, and the S&P 500 was off 0.6%.
