(September 21 – 16:20 ET) -The
Board of Directors of National
Bank of Canada
has extended
the mandate of André Bérard,
Chairman of the Board and Chief
Executive Officer, to March 2002. Bérard, 59, has held the Bank’s top position since 1989.

The Board also accepted the
decision of Léon Courville,
President, Personal and
Commercial Bank and Chief
Operating Officer, to leave his
position at the end of this
fiscal year. After 15 years in
the academic world as a
university professor at the
Ecole des Hautes Etudes
Commerciales, and after 15 years
with the Bank, Mr. Courville
wishes to pursue a new career.

Mr. Bérard stated in company
press release that Mr.
Courville’s successor will be
announced in the next few
weeks.
