(February 2 – 15:20 ET) – Ontario’s Finance Minister, Ernie Eves, is moving into the investment banking business.
Eves intends to resign his cabinet post and seat in the legislature to become vice chair and senior advisor in the Toronto office of Credit Suisse First Boston. Eves was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance on June 26, 1995.
The Chair of the Ontario Securities Commission
(OSC), David Brown, today praised out-going Finance Minister Ernie Eves for
his contribution to strengthening Ontario’s economy.
“Ernie Eves’ stewardship of the financial services industry has been a
significant factor in the on-going strength of Ontario’s economy,” Mr. Brown
said.
Mr. Brown noted the Minister’s lead role in turning the OSC into a self-
funded, independent Crown Corporation, which gave the OSC the resources to
fulfill its mandate.
“Mr. Eves has played a major role in providing protection to investors and promoting confidence in Ontario’s capital markets,” Ontario Securities Chairman David Brown said today, addin that he has been pleased to work closely with the Minister on a number of
initiatives, including the proposed merger of the OSC and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
“The Minister’s proposal demonstrates the leadership he has shown to ensure that Ontario’s financial services marketplace continues to meet the needs of both consumers and industry members,” said Brown.
Eves was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1981 as the MPP for the then Riding of Parry Sound, and was re-elected five times. He now represents the new riding of Parry Sound-Muskoka. Eves will remain as chairman of the Ontario Olympic Sports and Waterfront Development Agency.
