BCE Capital, a Canadian venture capital firm that invests in communications and information technology companies, today announced that George Cooney has joined the firm as a venture advisor.

Cooney, who co-founded InfoClarus, a wireless application platform company, will be based in Boston, Massachusetts, and will be responsible for expanding BCE Capital’s Northeast operations by focusing on investment and partnering opportunities in the region’s technology corridor. Current investments in the area include Bridgeport Networks, Ellacoya, and Millennial Net.

Cooney’s experience includes leadership positions in marketing, business development, operations, and finance. Prior to joining BCE Capital, he co-founded InfoClarus, where he launched a smartphone messaging platform and an enterprise mobility applications development platform. Cooney saw InfoClarus through two rounds of financing, two major acquisitions, and several strategic partnerships.

“George has a solid track record of identifying and realizing growth opportunities through strategic vision, hands-on leadership, and customer-focused approach. This, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit and extensive experience in developing and executing successful business strategies in global technology markets, will make him a valuable addition to our team,” said Gary Rubinoff, managing partner, BCE Capital.

Previously, Cooney held positions at both Nortel Networks and GTE Telenet. At Nortel, he was responsible for developing international markets through multiple overseas assignments. He served as the senior executive responsible for Nortel Corporate Development and Ventures, where he oversaw Nortel’s investment strategy and partnerships with emerging technology companies.
