(September 9 – 16:30 ET) – The Toronto Stock Exchange has named Barb
Stymiest as its new president and chief executive.
Stymiest was chief financial officer at Nesbitt Burns Inc.
Until this past Spring, she was chairwoman of the TSE. She has been
named after the TSE undertook an extensive international search for a
new exchange head.
A number of candidates were apparently on the short list, including
John Carson, head of market regulation at the TSE, Michael Wilson,
former federal finance minister and vice chair with RBC Dominion
Securities Inc., as well as a former head of the Philidelphia Stock
Exchange.
The post has been vacant since Rowland Fleming’s surprise resignation
in the spring. Fleming’s resignation was never been fully explained.
It left the TSE rudderless in the midst of its biggest overhaul in
exchange history.
The TSE is in the midst of demutualization, the national exchange
reorganization that will formalize its position as the sole senior
equities market in the country, and alternative trading systems are
on the verge of being introduced.
