A survey of Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. clients in the United States reveals confidence in the stock market, despite the attacks of September 11 and global and economic concerns.
According to the survey released today, 92% of respondents say, “the stock market continues to be the best place for long term investing.” The Harris Poll survey was conducted on November 6-7 among Schwab clients.
“Despite the market downturn of the past 18 months, and the unprecedented terrorist attacks against our country, 84% of our clients remain comfortable with their investment approach. Further, 66% agree that market conditions will have little impact on their ability to reach their long-term goals. These results illustrate the confidence and faith which investors place in the future of our economy and our financial markets,” said Charles Schwab, chairman and co-CEO.
At the same time, the recent market conditions have had a very real impact on many investors. Nearly one-fifth of respondents reported that as a result of the market downturn, they would have to delay their retirement. The survey also showed that the majority (67%) made no changes to their investment portfolios following September 11.
Among those respondents who characterized their current strategy as “waiting on the sidelines,” 71% suggested they are waiting to see the market show a steady upward trend before entering the markets again. Thirty-nine percent said they would depend on experts making positive statements about the market.
Most, 59% of clients believe that “looking for investments that are relatively safe is more important than looking for higher returns.”
Over the next 12 months many clients will be focusing on enhanced diversification and validation of their investment decisions. Few respondents expect to see the high level returns of the late 90s, the average anticipated rate of return for their investments over the next twelve months is 9%. In total, three quarters of respondents anticipate a return on investments of 10% or less.
