In honour of the United Nations’ International Year of the Volunteer, the CIBC World Markets Children’s Miracle Foundation is launching a national Miracle Generation! Challenge to promote youth volunteerism and community involvement.

“At CIBC World Markets, we want to recognize youth who are involved in their communities, and inspire others to become involved,” says Susan Storey, Chair of the CIBC World Markets Children’s Miracle Foundation. “That’s why we are inviting Canadian youth 18 years of age and under to tell us what they would do to make their community a better place in which to live.”

The foundation will issue 10 Miracle Generation! awards. Each award winner will be able to direct a $1,000 charitable donation from the CIBC World Markets Children’s Miracle Foundation to the eligible charity of their choice. A $500 Canada Savings Bond will also be presented in the award winner’s name. Entries must be received by Oct. 31, 2001. The rules for the Challenge can be found by visiting www.childrensmiracle.com.

As part of the Challenge, youth are being asked to answer four questions in writing:

  1. Why do you think volunteering is important?
  2. Have you ever done anything to help someone in need? What?
  3. What is the best part about living in your community/neighbourhood?
  4. What would you do to make your community/neighbourhood a better place in which to live?

The awards will be announced by a panel of celebrity judges at a special ceremony in Toronto on December 19, 2001. All entries will be judged on their quality and thoughtfulness.

The foundations’s Miracle Day is an annual, one-day event during which CIBC World Markets sales and trading staff from around the world in Asia, Canada, Europe and the United States, and CIBC Wood Gundy financial consultants across Canada donate their fees and commissions to children’s charities. This year, Miracle Day will be held on Wednesday, December 5th.
