(June 8 – 17:25 ET) – Claude A. Garcia, president, Canadian operations, The Standard Life Assurance Company, was elected chairman of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. at the CLHIA annual meeting held today in Toronto.

Garcia noted that “the industry will be working constructively with government and Parliament with a view to ensuring timely passage of the new federal financial services legislation.” He went on to emphasize that it is very important for the industry and its policyholders, as well as for the Canadian financial services industry at large, that the new “rules of the road” for financial services in Canada be put in place without undue delay.

Garcia will be supported by Chairman Elect Vincent P. Tonna, President and COO, The National Life Assurance Company of Canada.
