Canadians start working for themselves on June 28, one day later than last year, The Fraser Institute announced today.

In announcing Tax Freedom Day, the conservative think-tank said all personal income earned prior to June 28 goes to pay the total tax bill imposed by all levels of government: federal, provincial, and local.

“It is nearly impossible for an ordinary citizen to have a clear idea of how much tax they really pay. Tax Freedom Day gives Canadians a true picture of their total tax burden,” said Niels Veldhuis, senior research economist at the Fraser Institute, in a news release.

Every province, with the exception of Alberta and British Columbia, experienced a later Tax Freedom Day in 2004 than in 2003, according to the Fraser Institute.

In Ontario, Tax Freedom Day falls on June 27, four days later than in 2003. This stands as the largest increase in Tax Freedom Day among the provinces.
